I’d Rather Laugh

I stole this title from a book
of that name.
I would rather laugh.
I’ve shared the alternative
describing how I’ve lived.
I would rather laugh.
I don’t need to be the
loudest, longest laugher,
just so I can remember
to see, as Shakespeare did,
“”All the world’s a stage,
and all the men and women
merely players,””

Lately, without
the laughing catalyst
that was my clever husband,
I find that laughing at myself
can be delightful.
Like when I sat down
on the cat
and couldn’t stop
the part of me
that sits
once it was into motion,
and the cat- –
he didn’t scratch,
he didn’t act as if
this were untypical.
I picked him up
still laughing
placed him on my lap
where he should have been
in the first place-
and he was completely
loose and limber
like a bag of rice,
laughing at my embarrassment
no doubt
with the dignified laughter of cats
